How this estimate is calculated
- Electricity rate: you didn't enter one, so we assume 17.0¢/kWh (approximate U.S. residential average). Your rate may be very different.
- Usage: monthly bill ÷ rate × 12. Fixed charges on your bill are not separated out, so usage may be overstated.
- Sunlight: U.S. average of 4.6 peak sun hours/day — enter a ZIP for a state-level figure. Your roof's direction, tilt and shading are not considered.
- Production: system size × sun hours × 365 × 0.80 (allowing 20% for typical system losses).
- System size: sized to cover roughly 100% of your estimated usage, between 2 and 25 kW.
- Cost: $2.50–$3.20 per watt installed. Before any incentives.
- Savings: 70–95% of the energy your system offsets, valued at your rate. The range reflects how your utility credits exported solar power, which varies widely. Never more than your current bill.
- Payback: estimated cost ÷ estimated annual savings. Ignores future rate changes, maintenance, financing costs and incentives.
Under current federal law, the 30% residential clean energy tax credit (IRC Section 25D) does not apply to home solar installations completed after December 31, 2025. Our estimates do not include any federal tax credit. State, local or utility incentives may exist where you live — ask us, and confirm tax questions with a tax professional.
